Use These Plumbing Tips To Starve Off Mr. Winter

Winter is coming and it’s time to check the plumbing before it does the normal damage.  Winter has a habit of doing some of the worst damage to plumbing so it pays to check it before winter rolls around.  There are several things you should do even if you live in a warmer winter climate like Surrey or Langley, BC.   However, for those who live with the coldest of winters you need a few tips for winter you can to do save your plumbing.

Cold usual means freezing weather and pipes with standing water in them are easy for Mr. Winter to freeze solid.  Leaving the water running can be quite costly so you have to wrap them to keep them safe from the cold.

This also includes your garden hoses.  You should wrap them but since you won’t really be using them in the winter leaving the running is still costly. Put the hoses in your shed but be sure they don’t have any water in them.  The hose will cause some major damage to the inside of your house when it freezes.  The ice will travel up the pipe into your house. Either wrap them or put them away for the winter. That also includes the faucets.  Put jackets on them to keep them from icing up.  Pipe damage is the major problem in the winter months for those who live in the north.

To keep your house warmer, check the filters on your heater units. Whether its electric heat or oil they still need to have the filter changed to work at warming efficiently.  They can and will shut down if they get clogged or you’ll be cold all winter no matter how high you turn up the heat.

Be sure the walls, attic and around the doors and windows are properly insulated.  This is not only costly but it allows all the heat to escape through the gaps in the windows and around the doors.  All you need is some weather stripping to keep this from happening.  You can find some at your local hardware store.  It would be a shame to waste all that energy when you can install weather stripping costing less than ten dollars.

plumbing - Check your appliances such as the dishwasher and water heater for any potential problems you might have during the winter months.  Plumbing to these is vital, although, you can do dishes by hand, warming up water for a shower is almost impossible.
